Funny story…

I mentioned this the other day on Facebook, Mr. Matt LeBlanc took top honors earlier this year on Top Gear’s Hot Lap board. He actually beat Rowan Atkinson who races as a hobby.

Nice job, and he is not at all like Joey from friends. Thank God.

Anyway, the funny story is that I met his Dad.

It happened about 11 years ago now. It seems that the Aunt of the girl I was dating at the time was dating him, the father of Matt LeBlanc. I met him at a holiday party that I went to with my ex.

He was nice, polite, charming and honestly looked a LOT like Matt did on Top Gear.

Funny how that happens.

Speaking of which, Kim, I’m sorry I was a dick.

Now this is what I’m talking about.

I want that, like yesterday. With a nice slice of Tegra 3 thrown in too boot. That would be a true mobile computer. Kinda badass too. Connects to everthing.

Guess what I have started doing?

Going through and processing pictures!

I have started with the ones taken with the camera. From the several hundred that we’ve taken I picked out the best and will be getting at least 4 posts.

I just pulled 80 + from the Galaxy and still have to go through those. Then there will be a week of picture posts.

Pics won’t be the extent of the posts, but they will be a focus.

Here are some samples….

Wow, this really just sounds like “the TV news” to me.

http://lifehacker.com/5886571/brainwashing-techniques-you-encounter-every-day-and-how-to-avoid-them

Seriously, take this bit for example:

  • The same idea or phrase is frequently repeated to make sure it sticks in your brain.

  • Intense intelligence-dampening is performed by providing you with constant short snippets of information on various subjects. This trains you to have a short memory, makes the amount of information feel overwhelming, and the answers provided by the manipulator to be highly desired due to how overwhelmed you feel.

  • Emotional manipulation is used to put you in a heightened state, as this makes it harder for you to employ logic. Inducing fear and anger are among the most popular manipulated emotions.

Think about those and compare that to any TV news channel.

I never really knew the second point was a named technique till now though. I saw it as a phenomenon (eff yeah! I spelled that right first try bitches!) in the wild and recognized it though.

Never knew it had a name till now though.

Cool.

So I have been “dating”

At least that is the polite thing to call it. Some good, more bad and one very very flattering one.

Jeeze, now that I look at that statement it makes it seem like I have been around a lot as of late, which isn’t the case really. I have been trying though. Mostly it has only been talk and flirting. Some “dates” but not many really.

One of the women I did kind of see for a while. Something like a month. But it got weird fast and she dumped me, via txt message, for being “too nice to her.” Her words.

Funny thing is after about a week she was trying to get a hold of me to “hang out” again sometime.

Really dear?

You didn’t show me an ounce of respect as an adult in the way you ended things, via a freaking txt, and you expect or want something out of me?

No thanks, maybe if you had treated me fairly, honestly, and a little courtesy I would be more inclined, but not after that. She would have to do something amazing now to even get me to say hi to her.

Don’t think I am ranting against her as a person, she was kinda sweet, but what has dating come to when it’s totally cool for an adult to do something like that for that kind of reason?

In the end I’m more upset about how it ended than the fact that it did end.

But I did say a little something about flattering too didn’t I?

That is kind of a funny story really. You see, when in the right kind of mood I can be a real flirt when I’m out and about. In one of the stores that I stop of frequently I’ve been flirting with one of the girls working there for about a year. Talking about gardening and dating, whatever. Flirty chit-chat as I’m about the store.

At one point she mentions cucumbers that I brought in during the summer. I mentioned that I made a bunch of pickles to. How funny, she loves pickles!

You can see where this is gonna go, anyway. I brought her in a jar, with a little note and my number.

Which she used to say thanks for the pickles and get a hold of her any time.

The flattering part is that I guessed her age at 24, max, so this was a nice little ego boost really. After all I’m 39 right?

Well before I got a chance to call her I bumped into her in the store again and we got to chatting. Turns out she had a birthday coming up.

Well this is the perfect time for me to find out how old she is!

So I asked and she was a little timid about it, but I was charming and got it out of her…

HOLY SWEET BABY FREAKIN’ JESUS YOU ARE ONLY GOING TO BE HOW OLD?

20?

No shit, you are just turning 20 and giving your number to someone you know is almost 40?

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

“As flattering as that is dear, I don’t think I will ever be using your number again, you are closer to my daughters age than mine.”

I did say that and have not used that damn number again….jesus….

I almost feel dirty for just having gotten her damn number <shiver>.

Again, what the hell is going on around here that just being nice and civil to people is grounds for a 19 year old to throw down on me and for me to be “too nice”?

I almost scared to try again.

What next a freakin’ tranny?

Whoo hoo I’m back baby!

Think Bender and you will get the tone on that one right.

My little break seems to be over and I’m feeling a bit more like writing so you should be seeing much more regular posts from here on out. At least until I feel a bit burnt again. I think doing five plus posts a week, with pictures on top of a day job and being a Dad started to take a bit out of me.

This year I am shooting for over 100k pageviews though and I think Imma get there. January was over 10k so I hope I can keep it up. Will new content help?

I guess we will see.

But why is today’s other post named the way it is you may be asking?

Well that is because over the past couple of days I have pulled in over 100 google searches for the phrase “solar system.”

Really?

Freakin’ sweet, I guess there will be lost more uber-geek stuff, along with the gardening and photos.

The latter of which is gonna be cool. I have a bunch of really good ones to show off!

Even some “dating” stories and the rest of the mp3 player reviews. Finally, and I am really sorry they have not been done yet, I just needed to recharge a little.

Since science seems to be big as of late….

http://io9.com/5885156/the-galactic-haze-that-surrounds-the-milky-way-is-a-baffling-mystery

Mystery?

Really?

This phrase “It seems to originate in the region around the galactic center. It most closely resembles a natural phenomenon known as synchrotron emission. This type of radiation occur when supernovas accelerate electrons to relativistic speeds. These electrons then pass through magnetic fields, which causes them to spiral violently. “ Combined with the pic in the post should suggest what this is, or at least where to look.

What spins particles up to relativistic speeds, lives at the center of the galaxy, and occasionally eats?

Why it’s a super-massive black hole!

This stuff, I would imagine is the leftovers of a meal. Matter got too close to the beast and spewed out. The slower and/or heavier of the particles to be blasted off this mess didn’t have the velocity to tear free and are now being pulled back down into the galaxy.

Sigh, why does it have to be so mysterious sometimes?

Minor updates and a new project.

Minor updates being where I have been. That is the kind of story for another blog, if anything at all. Would never get mentioned here.

Anyway, I had the iPod touch review ready to go up after the Dell review, but it would have been with the older iOS version. I thought I would give it the benefit of the doubt and use the latest and greatest for it.

When thinking that I figured I might as well do two reviews of the device. One with the new iOS and one with the jailbroken version of it. Which I might add is now untethered so possibly useful. Because as stands, the iPod touch kinda sucks, even though it has extra cool niceties. Maybe the jailbreak will bring it even with the Dell.

Anyway.

How’s this for a new project.

I have a bunch of these cheap glass candle holders and the left over wax that didn’t burn from the candles. The holders are glass so I just don’t want to toss them out. I think Imma have to melt it down, mix it up, and re-pour it into the holders. Once I clean them and my breakfast dishes (already done).

holders-and-dishes-012012.jpg      extra-wax-012112.jpg

My only problems are, where do I but wicks to put in them and why do my balls suddenly feel like they are getting smaller?

Oh well it will be a fun project for Ella. Hopefully Hamilton will get me in another bear fight to swell them back up.

The long awaited hand held review. Part One.

For over a year my hand held device of choice was on it’s last legs. The audio out jack is shot. Sometimes it would work and sometimes not. Hell sometimes I would hit a bump and one of the speakers would cut out.

Considering the primary role of my hand held is as an mp3 player this just would not do. Since my hand held is often called on to do a lot of different things and standard mp3 player just would not cut it.

What does my hand held get called to do though?

On and off road gps navigation
Lists (like shopping and the like)
Notes (audio and written)
Games
Weird little programs
War driving
Geo-Caching
Network trouble-shooting
Email
Surfing the Net
Showing off pics of my daughter

The one I have been using for almost the past 10 years is a Dell Axim x50h running Windows Mobile 2003. Sneer if you wish, but this thing has features that still can not be matched. The only reason I’m replacing it is the audio jack and I still may fix it!

How can a nearly decade old PDA possibly be as feature rich as a current hand held though you ask?

How’s this for starters. It can still multi task far better than even the newest iPod touch. This Dell has a 650Mhz processor (overclocked to 724Mhz) and is a true multi tasking machine.

I can run the media player, minimize that. Fire up the gps (it’s not built it but it does have bluetooth so talks to my keychain one) tell it where I want to go and set it to audio directions then fire up my damn email if there is a wifi hotspot around. Then maybe play a theromin to entertain Ella.

All at the same time. Without a hiccup. Easily. Apple’s iOS can’t do that. Andriod can, but if the CPU and RAM are not enough it flickers a bit.

You know what else the Dell has that nothing else does?

An infrared I/O port. It can record, playback, and analyze IR signals. You know what that makes it with the right software?

Master remote for everything in your entertainment system. Everything. Even on weird off brand crap you can capture the “Sleep” button and map it to a custom skin for your every-remote. Hell you can record macros with timing offsets.

That way you can have a button for tv, one for dvd, one for game, and have dupes for with and without the receiver and speakers.

It does have negatives too. The screen is single touch, very old, and you probably ought to use a stylus or you will get frustrated.

To play video you have to convert the format first and to install programs you have to sync it. I guess in that regard it is still a lot like the iPod touch and Apple’s ilk.

It’s also now a dead platform. You can still get software for it, but nothing like you can for iOS or Android.

The SD card slot is also limited to 2GB cards since it’s so old. But how long a road trip needs more music than that?

Especially when they are cheap as dirt now and you can hot swap them.

Anyway, for a nearly decade old device it stand up really really well to the new stuff. It is old, and a bit clunky, takes work to make it do all I need it to, but it does it.

There are two contenders for taking it’s place and they will be reviewed in Part 2 and Part 3.
